August 1995

The In Situ Steam Enhanced Recovery Process (SERP) developed by Hughes Environmental Systems, Inc., removes volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) from perched groundwater and contaminated soils both above and below the water table. The technology uses a pressure gradient concept to extract contaminants from the subsurface. Steam is forced through the soil by injection to thermally enhance the recovery of organic contaminants. Extraction wells are used to pump and treat groundwater and to transport steam and vaporized contaminants to the surface. Extracted vapors are then condensed and treated by any of several vapor treatment techniques at the surface. This technology was demonstrated on a 2.3 acre site contaminated with diesel fuel at the Rainbow Disposal Site, Huntington Beach, California over 2 year period. Up to 40 feet of soil was treated with 35 injection and 38 extraction wells. The 90% confidence interval (996-3,570mg/Kg) for TPH after treatment (2,290mg/Kg) indicated that the technology did not meet the site-specific cleanup criterion of 1,000mg/Kg. Levels of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes were below the detection limit in treated soil.
