Abstract AWD developed the AquaDetox®/SVE technology to simultaneously extract volatile organic contaminants (VOCs) from soil and volatile or semi-volatile organics from groundwater. The technology integrates: 1) a high-efficiency stripping tower (>50 mm Hg) that uses low pressure steam to treat extracted groundwater, and 2) an SVE system that extracts contaminated soil gas from in situ soils. The Aqua®Detox unit, patented by Dow Chemical Company, can be used to remove groundwater contaminants that are normally considered "nonstrippable" (i.e., boiling points in excess of 200oC). Noncondensable vapors extracted by this system can be combined with SVE vapors and treated by granular activated carbon. A 1,200 gpm and 300 scfm system was demonstrated during the 2-week demonstration in September 1990 at the Lockheed site in Burbank, California. Soil gas concentrations were approximately 10 ppm for trichloroethene (TCE) and 400 ppm for tetrachloroethene (PCE); groundwater concentrations ranged from 400 to 600 µg/L for TCE and 2,000 to 2,500 µg/L for PCE. VOC removal efficiencies for groundwater exceeded 99.92 percent and groundwater effluent met the regulatory goal of 5µg/L. Soil gas removal efficiencies exceeded 98 percent.
