In Situ Bioventing Technology, R.E. Wright Environmental, Inc. (REWEI) (70KB)

Abstract

The R.E. Wright Environmental, Inc. (REWEI) Bioventing Technology is designed to aerobically biodegrade volatile organic compounds, including chlorinated ethenes, in permeable vadose zones where air movement can be achieved. This demonstration was part of a Multi-Vendor Bioremediation Technology in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the New York State Center for Hazardous Waste Management. The technology requires the installation of alternating 1 inch air extraction and injection wells. Spacing of the wells is determined by the character of the soil amendments, including ammonia for nitrogen and methane as a cometabolite are injected via the positive side of the blower. A primary objective of the demonstration was to determine the effectiveness of the bioventing in reducing six target VOC contaminants (acetone, 2-butanone, 4 methyl-2-pentanone, 1,2-dichloroethene, trichloroethene, and tetrachloroethene) in the soil to below the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation soil cleanup objectives. The pilot scale demonstration results showed that the technology is able to reduce VOC contamination in vadose zone soils to levels that satisfy Soil Cleanup Objectives in about 6 months. The cost associated with applying this technology to the treatment of 7,400 m3 (9700 yd3)of soil contaminated with VOC’s as in the demonstration is approximately $47.65/m3 ($36.46/yd3)
