UVB is an in situ system for remediating aquifers contaminated with VOCs. The system consists of a specially-adapted groundwater well, a negative pressure stripping reactor, an aboveground mounted blower, and a waste air decontamination system. Ambient air is pumped through the well water. The water level is raised inside the well due to negative pressure generated by a blower and the air-lift from rising air bubbles. Contaminants vaporize into the air bubbles and are removed from the well by the air flow. Circulation develops in the aquifer surrounding the well, with water entering the well at the base and leaving it from a screened segment at the top. This technology was demonstrated at March Air Force Base, California in 1993. The demonstration showed that TCE was reduced on average by greater than 94% in groundwater discharged from the UVB system, to about 3 ug/L. DCE reduction could not be conclusively established due to the low DCE concentrations in the influent. The radius of influence of the well was measured to be between 40 and 80 feet.
