Abstract

Terra-Kleen Response Group, Inc. developed a transportable solvent extraction system to remove semi-volatile and volatile organic contaminants from soil. This batch system uses a proprietary solvent blend to separate hazardous constituents from soils, sediments, sludge, and debris. Clean solvent is mixed with soil in extraction tanks; after an appropriate holding time, the contaminant-laden solvent is pumped into a sedimentation tank to remove suspended solids. Residual solvent in the treated soil is removed using vapor extraction; any residual solvent in trace amounts is destroyed using biological treatment. Treated soils are returned to the site; contaminant-laden solvent is regenerated (microfiltration to remove any remaining solids followed by a proprietary solvent purification system) and reused. The system was demonstrated in 1994 at the Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego, California using soil contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). PCB concentrations were reduced from an average of 144 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) to less than 1.71 mg/kg. Hexachlorodibenzofuran and pentachlorodibenzofuran concentrations were reduced by 92.7 and 84.0 percent, respectively. Oil and grease concentrations were reduced by 65.9 percent.
