Field Portable X-ray Fluorescence Analyzer HNU Systems SEFA-P (7,242KB)

Abstract

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducted a demonstration of field portable X-ray fluorescence (FPXRF) analyzers, in April 1995, at the RV Hopkins site in Iowa and the ASARCO Tacoma Smelter in Washington. The primary objectives of this demonstration were to determine how well FPXRF analyzers perform in comparison to standard reference methods, to identify the effects of sample matrix variations on the performance of FPXRF, to determine the logistical and economic resources needed to operate these analyzers, and to test and validate an SW-846 draft method for FPXRF analysis. The analyzer in this demonstration was manufactured by HNU Systems, Inc. and is called the SEFA-P Analyzer. The SEFA-P Analyzer uses three separate excitation sources and, therefore, can analyze a wide range of elements. The average sample throughput for this demonstration was approximately 7 to 8 samples per hour, although the count times can be varied. Based on the Compton calibration, the SEFA-P provided definitive level data quality for antimony, lead, and copper; and quantitative screening level quality data for barium.
