Abstract EPA 540/R-00/502a This is a SITE Technology Evaluation Report, because of operational difficulties, there will be no Innovative Technology Evaluation Report (ITER) on this project. The MACTEC, Inc. (MACTEC), NoVOCs™ in-well volatile organic compounds (VOC) stripping technology is an in-situ groundwater remediation technology designed for the cleanup of groundwater contaminated with VOCs. The NoVOCs™ technology was evaluated under the Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) Program at Naval Air Station (NAS) North Island, Installation Restoration Site 9 to assess the technology's ability to treat groundwater contaminated with high levels of chlorinated and aromatic hydrocarbons. Because of operational difficulties associated with biofouling and to a lesser extent iron precipitation on the NoVOCs™ well screen during the evaluation, a complete evaluation of the performance and cost characteristics of the NoVOCs™ technology could not be conducted. VOC results for groundwater samples collected from the NoVOCs™ system indicated that 1,1-dichloroethene (1.1-DCE), cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cis-1,2-DCE), and trichloroethene (TCE) concentrations were reduced by greater than 98, 95, and 93%, respectively. The average total VOC mass removed by the NoVOCs™ system ranged from 0.01 to 0.14 pounds per hour and averaged 0.10 pounds per hour during the evaluation. Accounting for the sporadic operation of the NoVOCs™ system, a direct evaluation of the radial extent of the NoVOCs™ treatment cell was not conducted. However, results from the dipole flow test data show that measurable pressure changes occur at cross gradient locations 30 feet from the NoVOCs™ well and may be observed at farther distances.
