Research Project: CROP IMPROVEMENT FOR USE IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA

Location:

Project Number: 210-22310-002-23
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 28, 1999
End Date: Sep 14, 2004

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to provide scientific information which can be applied to elevate agricultural production in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Approach:
In conjunction with partners from the 1890 Universities (Tuskegee Institute), utilize biotechnological methods to improve crops for use in Sub-Saharan Africa. Pest resistant germplasm will be identified and molecular markers indicative of resistance will be developed. Similarly, germplasm resistant to environmental stress, particularly drought, will be identified and appropriate molecular markers will be generated. Underlying biochemical mechanisms which govern such identified investigated. The gained information will be utilized to produce higher yielding and enhanced quality crops appropriate for Sub-Saharan Africa and food production systems. Training workshops on migratory pests that occur in East Africa will be conducted.
