National Asbestos Registry System (NARS)
Updated September 2004: Due to funding restrictions, NARS updates were suspended in April 2003. In July 2004, funding for updating NARS was approved through November 2004. Any outstanding data will be uploaded. Check this Web site for updated decisions concerning the long term future of NARS. The National Asbestos Registry System (NARS) may be used by building owners to assist in evaluating which asbestos contractors should be hired, or by the general public to determine the compliance history of asbestos contractors working at a specific locale. NARS is also used by delegated agencies to assist in targeting inspections, and by EPA managers as a general tool for evaluating the asbestos program. The NARS software enables the user to "look up" specific contractors, based upon a variety of criteria, and to view simple summary data, as well as specific data concerning owners and operators that match the given criteria. The user can then print or download the data if desired. EPA established NARS in 1989 to store and track compliance information on owners and operators of asbestos demolition and renovation activities (as defined in 40 CFR Part 61, Subpart 61, Subpart A) related to the Asbestos NESHAP on a national basis. All information in the system is stored and tracked by contractor name and city. Information is reported to NARS quarterly from State and Local environmental agencies and from EPA regional offices.
