Presidential Pets (1959-2000)
President Dwight Eisenhower walks by Heidi, his Weimaraner, as he returns to the White House following a press conference on March 11, 1959 at the Executive Office Building, which today is named the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in memory of the 34th president. President John F. Kennedy (1961-63) spends some time at the White House with his children, Caroline and John Jr., and their pony, Macaroni. Caroline Kennedy's pet ducks waddle across the White House lawn. Caroline Kennedy's father was President John F. Kennedy (1961-63). President Lyndon B. Johnson (1963-68) receives a greeting from his beagles, Him and Her. Johnson's beagles made the cover of Life magazine. President Richard Nixon's dogs pose for a picture during the holidays. This canine trio included a French poodle named Vicky, a Yorkshire terrier named Pasha and an Irish setter named King Timahoe. Nixon was president from 1969 to 1974.
President Gerald Ford (1974-77) gives his golden retriever, Liberty, some attention in the Oval Office. Amy Carter, daughter of Jimmy Carter (1977-81), holds her Siamese cat, Misty Malarky Ying Yang. After returning to the White House, President Ronald Reagan (1981-89) and his wife Nancy receive a warm greeting from Rex, their King Charles spaniel. President George H. W. Bush (1989-93) walks onto the White House lawn with his Springer Spaniel, Millie, and Millie's new puppies. One of the puppies is Spot, President George W. Bush's dog, that lives at the White House today. President Bill Clinton (1993-2001) owned two pets, a cat named Socks and a dog named Buddy.
A pair of beagles named Him and Her and a cat named Misty Malarky Ying Yang are among the pets who have lived in the White House in the last 50 years.
