Superfund Cleanup Policy & Guidance documents
Whenever there is a release of a sufficient quantity of a hazardous substance from a facility, the person in
charge of that facility must promptly notify the National Response Center. In addition, hazardous waste sites
are also sometimes discovered by local and state agencies, tribal governments, businesses, the U.S. EPA,
the U.S. Coast Guard, and by concerned citizens.

You can report potential hazardous waste sites to the National Response Center Hotline or to your state and local authorities. To report a hazardous waste site, emerging problem or emergency, you should call the hotline at (1-800-424-8802). This hotline is operated 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week.

EPA can pay an award of up to $10,000 to any individual who provides information leading to the arrest and conviction of any person who criminally fails to report a release.
