 5.  Manufacturing Extension Partnership
MEP is a nationwide network of not-for-profit Centers in over 400 locations nationwide, whose sole purpose is to provide small and medium-sized manufacturers with the help they need to succeed. The Centers, serving all 50 States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, are linked together through the Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology. That makes it possible for even the smallest firms to tap into the expertise of knowledgeable manufacturing and business specialists all over the U.S. These are people who have had experience on manufacturing floors and in plant operations. They've been where you are today. And they've lived to tell about it! Each Center has the ability to assess where your company stands today, to provide technical and business solutions, to help you create successful partnerships, and to help you keep learning through seminars and training programs. It is the special combination of each Center's local expertise and their access to national resources that really makes a difference in the work we can do for your company. Since we've been out there -- rolling up our sleeves and working side by side with manufacturers -- we've assisted more than 75,000 firms. Here are some examples where we've helped them and can help you: -eBusiness solution-lean enterprise-sustainable manufacturing approaches -quality management systems -business management systems -employee training and retention -new product and market development -materials engineering -energy efficiency -financial planning

 8.  Sustainable Industries Specialty-Batch Chemical Sector Program
The U.S. EPA has established a Sustainable Industry Partnership with the Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturers' Association (SOCMA), the Consumer Specialty Product Association (CSPA), and the National Association of Chemical Distributors (NACD). EPA staff are pursuing more relationships with state chemical industry councils, state governments, regions and environmental groups. SOCMA represents one part of the specialty-batch chemical sector, which is a highly innovative and entrepreneurial sector of the U.S. chemical industry. More than 5000 specialty-batch chemical facilities make over 95 % of the 50,000 chemicals produced in the United States, contributing over $80 billion to the national economy. The vast majority of specialty-batch chemical operations are small businesses with fewer than 50 employees. CSPA represents makers of formulated products for home and commercial use. Their membership includes companies engaged in the manufacture, formulation, distribution and sale of consumer specialty products for household, institutional and industrial use. CSPA member companies account for more than $14 billion in annual revenues. Unlike commodity chemical manufacturers, which mak e large quantities of the same product on a continuous basis, specialty-batch chemical manufacturers and formulators typically make a variety of specialized chemical products in small quantities during brief production campaigns. To be competitive, specialty-batch chemical operations must be able to fill small market niches and respond quickly to new customer requirements. We are also working with the chemical distribution sector through NACD. Distributors companies process, formulate, blend, re package, warehouse, transport, and market these chemical products exclusively for an industrial customer base of approximately 750,000. The Specialty-Batch Chemical Sector consists of three ongoing projects in addition to the development of the Partnership Agreement. These projects consist of Hazardous Waste Recycling, Air Permits and Compliance Promotion.
