Introduction

For the first time in Academic Year ending July 1995, data were collected by the U.S. Department of Education on bachelor's and master's degree recipients by race/ethnicity/citizenship for specific science and engineering fields. (From 1975 to 1994, data were collected by race/ethnicity for only very broad fields of study in the Completions Surveys conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES)/U.S. Department of Education.)

The Division of Science Resources Studies/National Science Foundation has tabulated data from the 1995 Completions file for the 50 States, D.C., and the territories to present this data on race/ethnicity for the specific fields in the degrees science and engineering taxonomy. (See Attachment for these groupings). Please note that the data in Tables A and B will differ from the trend data by race/ethnicity that are published in Science and Engineering Degrees, by Race/Ethnicity of Recipient: 1989-95 (NSF 97-334), as the trend data still must be tabulated on the broad fields of science and engineering collected earlier. Please refer to this report, however, for further information on the survey methodolgy used to obtain these data.

Table A presents bachelor's degree data by race/ethnicity of U.S. citizens and permanent resident aliens, and for non-U.S. citizens on temporary visas, by fine fields of study. Table B presents master's degree data by race/ethnicity of U.S. citizens and permanent resident aliens, and for non-U.S. citizens on temporary visas, by fine fields of study. Similar data at the doctoral level has been available since 1975 from the Survey of Earned Doctorates. See Science and Engineering Doctorates: 1996 (NSF 97-329).
