The islands of Hawai'i are a combination
of geology, ecology
and culture
unlike any other in the world. Isolation
and time allowed evolution and colonization
to continue untouched by man. The onset
of human activities, including the introduction
of non-native species,
altered the existing ecosystems in different
ways..
Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is the

largest region in the Hawaiian Islands where
native plant and animal species thrive through
protection and management. The National Park
encompasses over 10% of the land on the Big
Island of Hawai'i, and is one of only a handful
of protected areas stretching over many different
ecosystems from the summit of Mauna Loa to
where lava from Kilauea meets the Pacific
ocean. Declaration of the Park as an International
Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site
signifies to the world the obligation and
commitment given to manage and maintain the
area's unique native ecosystems.
