Clean Diesel Benefits Houston

At Houston's newly-developed Diesel Vehicle Research and Testing Facility today, EPA Regional Administrator Richard E. Greene announced the Bush administration's Clean Air Nonroad Diesel Rule will cut emission levels from construction, agricultural and industrial diesel engines by more than 90 percent. EPA Deputy Announces Diesel Rule at Dallas Facility

On the same day EPA Administrator Mike Leavitt signed EPA's Clean Air Nonroad Diesel Rule, EPA Deputy Administrator Stephen Johnson visited a truck stop featuring IdleAire, a service that helps reduce diesel idling.

"This is one of many tools for states to use in reaching our new, more protective clean air standards. By dramatically cutting diesel emissions through both cleaner engines and cleaner fuels, this rule will have enormous public benefits," said Johnson. ... Full Story

On April 15, thirty-one governors were told that areas of their states do not meet new health standards for ground-level ozone. Part or all of 474 counties nationwide are in nonattainment for either failing to meet the 8-hour ozone standard or for causing a downwind county to fail. The vast majority of counties, 2,668 in all, meet the new standards. Ozone aggravates asthma, damages the lining of the lungs and makes breathing more difficult. Some 159 million people live in areas that do not meet the new ozone standard. ... Full Story
