The Louisiana Coastal Wetlands are a Vital National Resource

The area brings in $3.5 billion annually in commercial and recreational fishery harvest, and is a critical winter habitat for migratory songbirds and waterfowl. Four years ago the Gulf of Mexico Program developed the Gulf Guardian Awards as a way to recognize and honor the businesses, community groups, individuals and agencies that are taking positive steps to keep the Gulf healthy, beautiful and productive.

The partnership of the Gulf of Mexico Program is currently soliciting entries for the 2004 Gulf Guardian Awards Program. The entry deadline is April 15. 2004. Winners will be announced in July and the awards will he given out during the Southern States Environmental Conference and Exhibition being held al the Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Mississippi, September 21-23.2004. This is the fifth year for the awards program which was started to honor the businesses, industries, non-profit organizations, government agencies, and individuals who are striving to make an environmental difference in the Gulf of Mexico.
