The National Petroleum Reserve - Alaska (NPR-A) covers 23.5 million acres of public land on Alaska's North Slope. BLM is currently preparing plans for three major areas in the NPR-A.

The buttons on your left or the text links below will guide you through the various sections of the site.

Northeast Planning Area

In April 2003 BLM announced plans to amend its 1998 land use plan for 4.6 million acres of public land in the northeast corner of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A). Public scoping meetings were held in October 2003. In June 2004, BLM released its draft plan amendment. Public comments were accepted through August 23. You can read the draft plan and learn more about the project, which includes preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), on the web site for the EIS.

Northwest Planning Area

Updated January 22. In January 2003 the Bureau of Land Management released the Draft Northwest NPR-A Integrated Activity Plan and Environmental Impact Statement, which describes four possible management alternatives for 8.8 million acres of public lands in the northwest portion of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. Public comments on the plan were taken at meetings held in February and March 2003.

The final IAP/EIS was completed last fall. Click here for the on-line version of that document. The Record of Decision was signed on January 22, 2004.

Colville River Special Area

In May 2002 the Bureau of Land Management decided to delay the development of the Colville River Special Area Multiple Use Activity Plan until it completes ongoing planning for the northwest portion of the National Petroleum Reserve - Alaska.
