The Department of the Interior is managed by Secretary Gale A. Norton and Deputy Secretary J. Steven Griles, five Assistant Secretaries, and eight Bureau Directors. In building the DOI management team, Secretary Norton - herself the former Colorado Attorney General - and the White House, sought leaders with significant management experience. All of Interior's Presidential appointees confirmed by the Senate have significant experience managing federal and state agencies, and/or non-profit associations. Several of these appointees also have significant private sector experience.
