Science on Ice: Research in Antarctica, CNN Segments

017 VHS

Date: 3/20/88

A compilation of seven short news bites on scientific research in the Antarctic: (These videos are not in the public domain)

Tape a Time: 2:36

The Gamma Ray Study at South Pole Station is the Pole's first gamma ray telescope that detects incoming gamma rays (radioactive charged particles released when a star explodes). Scientists focus their research on the large Magellanic cloud which is the birthplace of the most recently discovered super- nova.

Tape b Time: 3:00

Anti-freeze production in the Antarctic Cod, McMurdo Sound. The ability of the Antarctic cod to survive in salt water at 2 degrees below freezing is attributed to the presence of a natural anti-freeze produced by the fish. Through extensive research, scientists hope to discover how the anti-freeze works and how its genetic make-up could lead to practical applications in the medical field.

Tape c Time: 2:41

Water study at Lake Fryxell, Taylor Valley. Due to the fact that no living based vegetation exists in Antarctica except for algae and microbial compounds dissolved in the pristine environment, scientists hope to design a valid model for how man-made and environmental pollutants like carbon dioxide affect water worldwide. At lake Fryxell, scientists drill through 12 feet of ice to collect water samples for analysis to present a more precise model of man's impact on global climate changes.

Tape d Time: 2:57

A study of the impact of the explosions of Mt. Erebus in the Antarctic atmosphere will reveal how air particles move on a global scale and how they may affect worldwide climate changes. Scientists use a cascade impactor aboard a C-121 plane to collect airborne pollutants emitted by the gaseous discharge of the volcano.

Tape e Time: 2:33

Scientists study how Emperor penguins can dive to a depth of 10,000 feet. The penguins are fitted with a miniaturized micro-processor backpack which records their heart rate, depth and velocity. Data analyzed will reveal how the penguins can dive for so long, and how they can surface rapidly from depths that could cause fatal decompression sickness in man.

Tape f Time: 3:00

A massive iceberg which separated from the Ross Ice Shelf causes concern as global warming could cause larger portions of the ice shelf to break away and raise the level of the world's oceans by a foot or more.

Tape g Time: 2:23

The Solar Telescope at Pomerance Land near the South Pole, tracks dynamic changes in the sun. Helio seismology explains what goes on within the sun which will have practical applications in forecasts for space travelers.

Tape h Time: 3:00
