In his 2002 State of the Union address, President George W. Bush issued a
national Call to Service urging all Americans to dedicate two years – or
4,000 hours – in service to others. He created the USA Freedom Corps to help
Americans find opportunities to answer his call, and specifically recognized
the following three areas of need: responding in case of crisis at home,
rebuilding our communities, and extending American compassion throughout the
world.
The USA Freedom Corps is working to strengthen and reform
federally-supported service programs, break down barriers to service
opportunities through all federal agencies, and work with community-serving
organizations to expand opportunities that better meet important needs in
our communities.
Every American who wants to serve their country through volunteering should
have the opportunity to do so. The USA Freedom Corps is continually working
to expand and enhance its volunteer network to provide volunteer service
opportunities for Americans of all ages and backgrounds. The following
initiatives of the USA Freedom Corps are just some of the ways that
Americans are finding new opportunities to serve: American History,
Civics & Service, Students in
Service to America, Take Pride in
America, and Volunteers for Prosperity.
