Clint Eastwood made a group of fifth-graders’ day when he resumed his duties as spokesman for Take Pride in America, pitching in on volunteer projects at Franklin Canyon in Santa Monica National Recreation Area May 25. Eastwood teamed up with students and National Park Service volunteers to paint picnic tables and clean up a hiking trail.

"More than one-third of our nation belongs to you – the public. Take responsibility for it, starting with the sidewalk out front," Eastwood told the audience gathered atthe volunteer activity.

The day’s event also included special guests from the White House and California’s State House. Charity Wallace, Associate Director of Public Liaison for USA Freedom Corps, brought greetings and a letter from President George W. Bush thanking Eastwood for his community service and support of Take Pride. California Secretary of Resources Michael Chrisman announced that that California Governor Schwarzenegger has joined Take Pride’s Council of Governors – bringing the number of participating states to 44.

Highlighting the key to the program’s success – partners – Take Pride’s Executive Director Marti Allbright added, “Take Pride is all about partnerships, among civic organizations, youth groups, conservation groups and businesses, as well as federal, state and local governments.”

Other distinguished guests included Ruth Coleman, California State Park Director and Jody Noiron, Angeles National Forest Supervisor. Take Pride Charter Partners were represented as well, with Derrick Crandall of American Recreation Coalition; Kym Murphy, Karen Kawanami, Kris McNamara and Janice Sindoni of The Walt Disney Company; Sue Bray of The Good Sam Club; Bill Anderson of Westrec Marinas; and Shari Boyer and Chris Boyer of Government Solutions Group attending.

Many thanks to Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area Superintendent Woody Smeck, his staff, the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the Mountains Recreation and Conservancy Authority for hosting this great Take Pride event!

Cheers for the fifth-grade class too! The students, from Park View Center School in Simi Valley, California, are the Grand Prize Winner of the 2003-2004 Jiminy Cricket's Environmentality Challenge, a unique program led by The Walt Disney Company that encourages fifth-grade students to think more about their environment and why it is "cool to care" about the Earth.
