Citizen Corps Assists FEMA with Hurricane Recovery Efforts

   
  Citizen Corps Councils and national Citizen Corps affiliate organizations mobilized more than 2,000 volunteers and representatives from 45 states to provide disaster support in Florida communities affected by Hurricanes Charley and Frances. Citizen Corps will also be recruiting an additional 500 people nationwide to support disaster recovery efforts following Hurricane Ivan.

USA Freedom Corps Director Addresses Medical Reserve Corps National Conference

   
  National governmental and nongovernmental organizations, emergency response and public health experts, and other community volunteers met from July 7-9, 2004, at the National Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) Conference in Baltimore, Maryland. At the conference MRC members were able to share the best practices and strategies for responding to terrorist attacks, natural disasters, and providing general public health care and information.

Peace Corps: It’s a Family Affair

   
  Thirty-seven year-old Matthew Onega left many things behind when he departed for Africa to become a Peace Corps volunteer - except his parents. Former Peace Corps volunteers in the Solomon Islands, Albert and Cheryl Onega arrived in Africa only months after Matthew for their second tour in the Corps.

  Around the world, Peace Corps volunteers assist thousands of people; however, few people stop to think what happens when volunteers need assistance. Working behind the scenes everyday are more than 135 Peace Corps medical officers (PCMO) who respond to the medical needs volunteers encounter while serving overseas.

Keep America Beautiful® Kicks Off National Great American Cleanup™ March 1 in New York’s Times Square

   
  Millions of volunteers will make a clean sweep of communities nationwide this spring during Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup™. The nation’s largest annual community improvement program will kick off March 1 in Times Square with a multi-media tribute to Keep America Beautiful. For the second consecutive year, President George W. Bush is serving as Honorary Chair of the Great American Cleanup™.

Call-to-Service: Citizen Corps Launches in Ohio

   
  The Ohio Community Service Council, in partnership with Ohio Emergency Management Agency, the Ohio Volunteer Center Association, Ohio Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters (VOAD) and the Ohio Retired and Senior Volunteer Program Directors Association (RSVP), received a grant of $450,000 from the Corporation for National and Community Service to launch Citizen Corps in Ohio. Ohio was one of only six states to receive the initial grant in 2002.
