The Illinois Lewis & Clark Festival took place May 13-16, 2004 at sites near the point of departure of the expedition. The Opening Ceremonies - Eve of Discovery, were to be held on May 13 at the Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Illinois, which included nationally recognized musical acts and special invited guests included Governor Blagojevich of Illinois and President Bush. On the Expedition Departure Day, May 14, at the Lewis & Clark State Historic Site in Hartford, Illinois, there were heritage crafts demonstrations, scientific presentations on the flora/fauna of the expedition and a performance by the U.S. Army Old Guard. On Saturday and Sunday, May 15 and 16, Lewis & Clark Historical Days offered powwows and reenactments (with expert interpretations), scholarly historic presentations on the expedition and exhibits at several sites in the Alton, Illinois area. Other weekend activities included foot and bicycle races, canoeing and Chautauqua events.
