Mrs. Bush Commemorated
International Women's Day

Afghan Women Today: Realities and Opportunities

On March 8, 2002, Mrs. Bush celebrated the indomitable spirit, heroism and endurance of Afghan women and showed solidarity with them and the commitment of the world community to their cause.

Mrs. Bush commemorated International Women's Day and underscored the issue of women's rights in Afghanistan, which Mrs. Bush discussed in November of 2001 when she delivered the weekly radio address to the nation. The UN's commemoration of International Women's Day, entitled "Afghan Women Today: Realities and Opportunities," highlighted the status of women and girls in Afghanistan.

Mrs. Bush's remarks focused on the vital impact education will have not only for Afghan women and girls, but also on the rebuilding of the entire country.
