The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) relies on sound science to safeguard both human health and the environment. Leading-edge research helps provide the solid underpinning of science and technology for the Agency including ways to prevent pollution, protect human health, and reduce risk. Work at laboratories, research centers, and regional offices across the country helps improve the quality of air, water, soil, and the way we use resources. Applied science builds our understanding of how to protect and enhance the relationship between humans and the ecosystems of Earth.

The following list of research areas comprises both traditional areas of environmental concern as well as emerging technologies that may have environmental effects. Select the links to see a listing of on-going research in that area.
