The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is partners with state/tribal/territorial governments in the regulation of pesticides. Regional Pesticide Programs, located within the regional offices throughout the U.S., conduct enforcement activities, monitor pesticide imports, participate in initiatives that identify and reduce the risk from pesticides, and enter into assistance agreements with states/tribes/territories to develop and maintain pesticide regulatory programs. Together, EPA and its partners regulate the registration, manufacture, sale, distribution, use and disposal of pesticides.

  • oversight of the delegation of pesticide "use" enforcement to states, called "primacy".
  • funding, managing, and reviewing assistance agreements with state/tribal/territorial regulatory pesticide programs that monitor pesticide use/misuse activities, certify and train pesticide applicators, and implement field programs and initiatives.
  • Reviewing laws, regulations, and ordinances for adherence to the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).
  • Conducting inspections and taking enforcement actions in areas of regional/national priority.
  • Providing a first line of communication with the public on pesticide-related issues and distributing outreach materials to meet local needs.
