Tolerance Revocations

EPA revokes pesticide tolerances when all registrations of a pesticide have been canceled in the United States and the tolerances are not needed for imported foods or when there are no registered uses for certain crops. EPA considers how long it will take for treated commodities to pass through the channels of trade before revoking a tolerance. In some cases, where there are reasons for revoking tolerances quickly, EPA works with the Food and Drug Administration to develop guidance for food processors on how they can document that food products that may contain residues were legally treated, since if a tolerance was in effect when the food was treated with the pesticide, the residues are allowable if they fall within the tolerance level.
