and Student Programs
EPA has developed the following programs and resources to provide interesting
opportunities for new talent.
EPA
Intern Program
The EPA Intern Program at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) is a comprehensive, entry-level, professional, full-time employment
and
career development program. As a program participant, you will join
an intensive two-year program to help you “jump-start” your
career and develop your potential for future advancement within the Agency.
Student Services Contracts
The Office of Research and Development offers an exciting career opportunity
for students seeking scientific or administrative services experience.
In this program, students engage in specialized research/activities within
their field of study/work, form contacts with fellow scientists/co-workers
in various technical fields, gain professional training, explore potential
career opportunities and receive academic credit where applicable. Student
Services Contracts offer the flexibility (full/part-time) students require
while providing comprehensive benefits (i.e. competitive salary based
on training/experience, travel expenses, training, workers’ compensation
and equipment/supplies).
National Network
for Environmental Management Studies (NNEMS)
NNEMS is a comprehensive fellowship program managed by EPA's Office of
Environmental Education. The purpose of the NNEMS Program is to provide
students with practical research opportunities and experiences. Each participating
headquarters or regional office develops and sponsors projects for student
research. The projects are narrow in scope to allow the student to complete
the research by working full-time during the summer and/or part-time during
the school year. Research fellowships are available in Environmental Policy,
Regulation, and Law; Environmental Management and Administration; Environmental
Science; Public Relations and Communications; and Computer Programming
and Development.
NNEMS fellows receive a stipend at a level determined by the student's
level of education and the duration and location of the research project.
Fellowships are offered to undergraduate and graduate students. Students
must meet certain eligibility criteria.
The application deadline for the NNEMS Program is in the winter of each
year with all projects beginning the following summer. Complete application

Student Environmental Associate Program and Diversity Initiative
EPA's Office of Environmental Justice is sponsoring the Student Environmental
Associate Program and Diversity Initiative, a cooperative venture between
EPA and the Environmental Careers Organization. Last year, EPA sponsored
114 students from a wide variety of communities and tribes across the
country. Each student completed a paid, full-time, on-site training opportunity
of three to six months. These talented Associates were drawn from a culturally
diverse pool of over 2000 students based on academic achievement, extracurricular
activities and stated interest in pursuing an environmental career. To

Tribal Lands Environmental Science Scholarship Program
This program's intent is to enable Native Americans to work for the environmental
protection of tribal lands by assisting them in their pursuit of environmental
science degrees. Full-time junior, senior, and graduate students majoring
in an environmental discipline are eligible to compete for the scholarships.
Students compete based on grade-point average, knowledge of Indian culture,
commitment to environmental protection, character and leadership ability,
level of study, and work experience.
EPA works with the American Indian Science
and Engineering Society (AISES)
to select the scholarship winners. Students wishing to apply should do
so through AISES, which has chapters on many college campuses and may
be contacted at 1630 30th Street, Suite 301, Boulder, CO 80301 or on (303)
939-0023. Applications must be postmarked by June 15 of each year.
EPA's National Center for Environmental
Research
EPA's National Center for Environmental Research (NCER) operates several
programs which seek to improve educational opportunities for promising
young people. The program's focus is to motivate talented students to
pursue environmental careers, and enrich the experience of currently practicing
environmental scientists and engineers through visiting scientist programs.
NCER operates a toll-free help line for information on all of its programs.

Resident Research Associateship Program (NCER)
This government-wide program enables post-doctoral and mid-career technical
professionals to work as visiting scientists at federal laboratories,
including EPA, for periods of up to three years. Applicants must have
a Ph.D. or equivalent. The National
Research Council
operates this program nationally.

Science To Achieve Results (STAR) Graduate - Fellowships
This program awards graduate education fellowships for masters and doctoral
level students in environmentally-related fields of study. The purpose
of the fellowship program is to encourage promising students to obtain
advanced degrees and pursue careers in environmentally related fields.

Fellows Program
The U. S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) sponsors the program. To

Students who, at the time of application, are in a graduate or professional
degree program in a marine or aquatic-related field at a U.S. accredited
institution of higher education may apply for a Sea
Grant
through their local
Sea Grant program .
