CWNS 2000

Drawing of waste discharge from pipe

The Office of Wastewater Management conducts the Clean Watersheds Needs Survey (CWNS) on a periodic basis. The CWNS, a joint effort between States and EPA, is conducted in response to Section 205(a) and 516 of the Clean Water Act. The CWNS has information on publicly-owned wastewater collection and treatment facilities, facilities for control of sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs), combined sewer overflows (CSOs), stormwater control activities, nonpoint sources, and programs designed to protect the nation's estuaries. Information obtained from the survey is maintained in the CWNS database. The collected data are used to produce a Report to Congess which provides an estimate of clean water needs for the United States.

The CWNS 2000 Report to Congress was completed on August 20, 2003 which provides all pertinent data from the 2000 survey. If you need assistance in obtaining access to the charts, tables, and graphics in the document, contact our staff at 202-564-0673. Individuals using the Section 508 of the Americans Disabilities Act compliant version who may require additional assistance, dial the above number.

The 2000 survey information is available in a series of reports that can be viewed on-line, downloaded to your computer, or printed. The Needs, Discharge, and Population reports allow the user to select facility-specific information by state, county, and watershed. A detailed listing of data for an individual facility can be displayed or saved to your computer using the Facility Fact Sheet. The facility fact sheet will also be available through Enviromapper for Water (expected to be available on May 2004). EPA also provides reports about the 16,255 wastewater treatment facilities in operation. The Facility Inventory provides data on all facilities within a given State. The Population Served and Flow report gives data by State, on population served and flow for publicly owned wastewater treatment facilities currently in operation. The Process report allows you to download a database that contains all the unit process data associated with any facility in the database. For comparison, the three standard reports from the 1996 survey are also available.

Contact information is available for State and Regional CWNS Coordinators.
