Education and Outreach

EPA's Lead Awareness Program designs outreach activities and educational materials, awards grants, and manages a toll-free hotline to help parents, home owners, and lead professionals learn what they can do to protect their families, and themselves, from the dangers of lead.

Lead Awareness Program Activities

Lead Poisoning Prevention Media Outreach Kit (PDF format) -- A Lead Poisoning Prevention Media Outreach Kit has been developed by EPA to assist state and local health, environmental, and housing agencies in working with the media, and to create press and outreach materials. The Media Outreach Kit is available in PDF, and may be accessed by clicking on the link above. Hard copies may be obtained through the National Lead Information Center at 1(800) 424-LEAD.

WIC Nutritionist Educational Campaign - Designed for and distributed to nutritionists and program managers with the US Department of Agriculture's Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC), this packet provides information on how program staff can help their clients protect themselves and their families from lead. The packet contains fact sheets about lead and nutrition, medical considerations and screening, and lead hazards in the home. The cornerstone of this project is the Fight Lead Poisoning with a Healthy Diet brochure.

Keep It Clean Campaign - The disturbance of lead paint that occurs during home improvement and painting poses a serious threat to the health of adults and children. The Keep It Clean Campaign aims to help New Englanders understand the simple measures they can take to avoid lead poisoning during home improvement projects. The educational messages of the campaign focus on easy steps that can make home projects lead-safe.



Current Lead Outreach Grants

National Council of La Raza Grant Exit Disclaimer - National Latino service organization was awarded funds to develop and distribute a television public service announcement and poster promoting lead screening of children. The campaign, launched in the fall of 2002, targets Spanish-language television programming and health care providers in Latino communities.

National Coalition for Lead-Safe Kids Grant- Consortium of community-based organizations promoting lead poisoning prevention activities. The coalition was awarded funds to assist partner agencies distribute EPA and locally developed materials to high-risk neighborhoods.

Hope for Kids-Worldwide Grant Exit Disclaimer - National faith-based organization was awarded funds to develop innovative educational approaches to address lead poisoning in six target cities across the country.
