Multimedia Planning and Permitting Division
The Multimedia Planning and Permitting Division assists
State, local and tribal agencies with air pollution control, permitting,
pesticides, toxic substances, underground storage tanks, and hazardous
and solid waste programs. The Division conducts the federal pesticides
and underground storage tank enforcement programs. The Division also maintains
the Region 6 Human Health Medium-Specfic
Screening Levels.

 Air
Programs:
The Air Program Sections work with states on State Implementation
Plans (SIPs) to improve air quality and assist states with the mobile
source air pollution control programs, which include vehicle inspection
and maintenance, clean fuel, and transportation control programs. Air
Programs also manage the Region ambient air monitoring program and maintain
collection of quality air monitoring data. Ambient air monitoring data
is analyzed to determine progress toward attainment of the National Ambient
Air Quality Standards. Voluntary programs are developed to reduce exposure
to radon and other indoor air pollutants and to reduce gases involved
in global warming through the various "Green" initiatives. Air programs
also work with the states on air permits, grants, and tribal affairs.
RCRA
Subtitle C (Hazardous Waste) Program:
RCRA Subtitle D (Non-Hazardous and Solid Waste) Program:
The Subtitle D Program administers the authorization
of the RCRA Subtitle D Program to States. It includes programs that
deal with Household Hazardous Waste disposal, used tire disposal, Recycling
Programs, Composting, Mercury lamps, used oil, used batteries, waste-to-energy,
and many other solid waste issues. The Program provides assistance to
Indian Tribes for Solid
Waste Issues.
The Subtitle I program administers the authorization
of the RCRA Subtitle I Program to States. Subtitle I includes requirements
for tank notification, interim prohibition, new tank standards, reporting
and recordkeeping requirements for existing tanks, corrective action,
financial responsibility, compliance monitoring and enforcement, and
approval of State programs. The law also requires EPA to develop a comprehensive
program for the regulation of UST systems "as may be necessary to protect
human health and the environment."
The Pesticides Section manages cooperative agreements with State agencies
that regulate pesticides. The State pesticide regulatory agencies are
responsible for the enforcement of pesticide laws and certification of
pesticide applicators, according to the cooperative agreements. Complaints
from citizens that involve the application of pesticides are referred
to the appropriate State agencies. The Pesticide Section supports pesticide
programs to protect agricultural workers, prevent pollution of ground
water, conserve threatened and endangered species, promote integrated
pest management, and reduce the risks of pesticide use. Also, the Pesticide
Section answers questions and provides information about pesticide laws
and regulations, pesticide safety, and the proper use of pesticides.
Asbestos
The Region 6 Asbestos Program is designed to limit the exposure of
the public to Asbestos through training and accreditation of Asbestos
professionals and the proper management of asbestos in schools.
Lead-Based
Paints
The Region 6 Lead-Based Paint program provides customer service regarding
EPA's national program to prevent and reduce lead-based paint exposures
and hazards. Information on the requirements for the pre-renovation education

Indoor
Environment
The EPA's Radon Program goal is to
prevent the public's exposure to high radon levels in Homes. The EPA
Indoor Air Quality Program goal is to reduce risk to human health
from indoor air pollutants. The Tools
for Schools program goal is to improve indoor air quality in schools.
Human Health
The Children's Health Program was formed to address environmental
issues relating to Children's Health
The EPA's Nail Care Partnership concerns the health effects of chemicals routinely used in nail salons.
Radiation
The EPA's Radiation Program carries out the Agency's mission to issue
policy guidance and regulations, measure environmental radiation levels,
and evaluate the impact of radiation on public health.
Toxic
Release Inventory (TRI)
Each year EPA issues a Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) data package which
serves as a report card for how the nation is progressing in the effort
to decrease releases of toxic chemicals into the environment.
