EPA, Environment Canada Release Georgia Basin-Puget Sound Air Quality Study

September 28, 2004

The US Environmental Protection Agency and Environment Canada today released the Characterization of the Georgia Basin-Puget Sound Airshed Report in support of the development of an international airshed strategy between Canada and the United States.

This two-year study, conducted by leading air quality researchers and scientists in the Pacific Northwest, examines the current state of air quality in the region and how air travels and carries pollutants around the Georgia Basin-Puget Sound Basin. The study focuses on ground level ozone, fine particulate matter, and visibility in the trans-boundary airshed.

Growth in the region continues to put stress on the environment. Population growth, expanding suburban development, increasing transportation demands and developments in the energy sector all affect air quality. The study is being used in the development of strategies to help reduce air pollution associated with these factors.
