Science points us toward innovative solutions to today’s major challenges, provides the foundation for economic growth and development, and enhances our quality of life.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) along with other federal agencies has developed information in support of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy report, "Science for the 21st Century".

As the report states, "Science is a critical element of the larger enterprise that will ensure our future security, prosperity, health, and quality of life." At EPA, environmental science plays an important role to inform the decisions that EPA and others make to protect human health and safeguard the environment. This Web site emphasizes EPA’s results as well as our outcomes, and illustrates science in action at both the national and local levels. The information contained in the report focuses on four major areas of responsibility:

EPA relies on sound science to safeguard both human health and the environment. The Agency performs leading-edge research that helps provide the solid underpinning of science and technology for the federal science enterprise. EPA conducts said research in ways that help prevent pollution, protect human health, and produce sound scientific results. Our scientific approach provides a better understanding of how to protect and enhance the relationship between humans and the ecosystems of Earth.
