Michael Brown - Associate Assistant Administrator for Research and DevelopmentMichael Brown is EPA’s Associate Assistant Administrator for Research and Development. Brown provides counsel to Dr. Paul Gilman, the agency’s science advisor and assistant administrator for research and development, and leads the public affairs function for R&D.;

Prior to joining EPA, Brown launched and led Fleishman-Hillard’s Seattle office; Fleishman-Hillard is the second-largest communications firm in the world. Clients included Oregon State University—for which he developed the 10-year plan that will elevate their College of Engineering into the nation’s top-25—as well as consumer goods and high-tech clients.

Before opening the Seattle office, Brown served as vice president of Fleishman-Hillard’s Atlanta office, where he led the consumer and public affairs practice groups. Clients throughout Michael’s career have included Georgia Natural Gas, ValuJet Airlines, Snapper (manufacturers of outdoor power equipment), Bass (ale, not shoes!), Coleman, Starbucks, Blue Circle Americas (the British aggregates company), Savannah College of Art & Design and other highly regarded brands.

Brown was a founding partner of Jensen & Company Public Relations, a Washington, DC-based public affairs firm. Their clients included the Republican National Committee, Executive Committee of the Summit of Industrialized Nations, President’s Commission on Minority Business Development, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Maxima Corporation.

Brown began his career as an advance representative for then-Vice President George Bush and then worked as political coordinator for the northeast of the George Bush for President campaign, reporting to Andrew Card and Ron Kaufman. He later served in Presidential Personnel at the Bush-Quayle Transition and at The White House. Additionally, he was Labor Secretary Elizabeth Dole’s congressional liaison for the re-authorization of the Job Training Partnership Act.

Brown was graduated from the University of Puget Sound with a B.A. in politics and government with minors in economics and art history. He is a native of the Pacific Northwest and enjoys snow skiing, hiking, sailing, bicycling, gardening and—occasionally—mountain climbing. He and Mark Mead, his partner of 14 years, live in Alexandria, Virginia.
