Abstract:
On July 23, 1999, EPA finalized a rule revising its Air Quality Index (AQI) to enhance the public's understanding of air pollution across the nation. Previously known as the Pollutant Standards Index, this uniform air quality index is used by state and local agencies for reporting on daily air quality to the public. The Index provides general information to the public about air quality and associated health effects.

This file contains supplemental guidance to the AQI rule on procedures for reporting of daily air quality. This guidance is designed to aid local agencies in reporting the air quality using the AQI as required by federal regulation (Part 58.50 of 40 CFR and Part 58 of 40 CFR, Appendix G.)
