Diplomatic passports have a maximum validity of five years. However, some diplomatic passports are not initially issued for the full five-year validity. Those employees who are issued a diplomatic passport for less than five years and who are still assigned abroad when the passport is due to expire may receive an amendment extending the validity of the passport. The passport's expiration date can never be extended for more than 5 years after the issuance date, however.
The Consular Section at the employee's foreign post may add an amendment to an existing diplomatic passport to extend the period of validity without the Department’s prior approval provided that:
The diplomatic passport was issued less than 5 years ago.
The individual presents travel orders or other written documentation from his employing agency that confirms the assignment and includes the date to which the assignment has been extended.
The individual concerned is assigned to the consular district extending the passport.
The individual completes Form DSP-19.
