If you have been robbed, there are a lot of things you need to think about and get in order. Here are a few helpful hints about what you need to do.
Police Report
: It is very important to file a report with the local Guatemalan police concerning the incident. You will need the report later in order to get a new passport and obtain a new Guatemalan visa or exit permit. File it at the nearest police station in Guatemala or at the following address:
3er Cuerpo Policia Nacional 29 Calle 13-36, Zona 5 Guatemala City Tel. 331-0203
Money
: You will need money. The easiest way to get money from the U.S. is to use Western Union. There are two ways to get money wired to you through Western Union.
First, you can ask a family member or friend to wire money from a Western Union agency in the U.S. directly to a Western Union agency in Guatemala. This is the easiest, quickest, and most convenient way to get money sent to you.
Second, you can have the money wired from a Western Union agency in the U.S. to the State Department in Washington, D.C., which will in turn send the money to the American Embassy in Guatemala. This method can take 2-3 days.
: May include bus/cab fare and the possible purchase of a new airline ticket.
Passport:
A new passport will cost $65 (cash), plus approximately $5 for photographs.
Airport Tax:
When you leave Guatemala you will need to pay a $20 international departure tax.
Exit Stamp:
In order to leave the country, you will need to get a Guatemalan exit stamp placed in your new passport, if applicable. To get your exit stamp, you will need Q10, the police report, and one photo. The process must be completed at the Guatemalan Immigration Extranjeria Department, located at the following address:
