Dr. Bruce Umminger

Dr.
Bruce L. Umminger
is Senior Scientist in the Office of Integrative Activities
of the Office of the Director of the National Science Foundation
(NSF).
Dr. Umminger
came to the NSF from the University of Cincinnati (UC) where
he was Professor of Biological Sciences, a Fellow of the Graduate
School, President of the UC chapter of Sigma Xi for two years,
and Acting Head of the Department of Biological Sciences for
two years. His research program included visual orientation
in copepods, low temperature biology of fish, and the biochemistry
of the coelacanth, a "living fossil." He joined NSF as Program
Director of Regulatory Biology. He has held a number of positions
at the Foundation including Deputy Division Director, Acting
Division Director, and Division Director of Cellular Biosciences;
and Division Director of Integrative Biology and Neuroscience.
He took year-long details to the Department of State as Senior
Advisor on Health Policy in the Office for International Health
Policy; and to the Smithsonian Institution as Senior Advisor
on Biodiversity.

In
the Office of Integrative Activities,
Dr. Umminger focuses on policy development and strategic planning
for the Foundation especially where integrative activities are
involved. He also deals with management issues that cross the
Foundation, provides advice on misconduct in science, and has
significant responsibility for the Science and Technology Centers:
Integrative Partnerships Program. He is the Office of Director
Liaison to the Office of Inspector General and to the Audit
and Oversight Committee of the National Science Board.
In the
Federal government, Dr. Umminger currently serves as a member
of the Interagency Working Group on Research Misconduct Policy
Implementation of the National Science and Technology Council
(NSTC). He has served as Executive Secretary for the National
Science Board Committee on Centers and Individual Investigator
Awards; as Vice-Chair of the Biotechnology Research Subcommittee,
Committee on Fundamental Science, NSTC; as Executive Secretary
of the Subcommittee on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics,
Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, NSTC; as Executive
Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution's National Biodiversity
Information Center Advisory Planning Board; as Chair of the
NASA Specialized Centers of Research and Training Peer Review
Panel; as a member of the NASA Space Station Biological Research
Project; as a member of the NASA Neurolab Steering Committee;
and as a member of the NASA Space Shuttle Proposal Review
Panel in the Life Sciences.
Dr. Umminger
is a member of numerous professional societies, and has served
as Chair of the Biological Sciences Section of the American
Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS); as a member
of the AAAS Council; as Secretary of the American Society
of Zoologists; as a member of the Program Executive and Program
Advisory Committees of the American Physiological Society;
and as Chair of the American Institute of Biological Sciences
Congressional Fellow Liaisons Committee. He is a Fellow of
AAAS and the New York Academy of Sciences. He has served on
numerous advisory committees for the Arlington County Public
Schools.
Dr. Umminger
received his B.S. magna cum laude, M.S., M.Phil., and Ph.D.
degrees in biology from Yale University.
