EIGHT NEW SUPERFUND SITES IN EIGHT STATES ADDED TO NATIONAL PRIORITY LIST, 13 PROPOSED

EIGHT NEW SUPERFUND SITES IN EIGHT STATES
ADDED TO NATIONAL PRIORITY LIST, 13 PROPOSED


EPA today announced adding eight new Superfund hazardous waste sites to the National Priorities List (NPL) and proposing 13 others. Generally, a site is placed on the NPL if preliminary investigations indicate that it warrants further investigation and possible cleanup. Currently, there are a total of 63 proposed and 1,231 final sites on the NPL nationwide. The eight new final sites are: Alark Hard Chrome, Riverside, Calif.; Alaric Area Ground Water Plume, Tampa, Fla.; Indian Refinery-Texaco Lawrenceville, Lawrenceville, Ill.; Riverfront, New Haven, Mo.; Lockwood Solvent Groundwater Plume, Billings, Mont.; Portland Harbor, Portland, Ore.; Gilt Edge Mine, Lead, S.D.; and Naval Weapons Station Yorktown - Cheatham Annex, Williamsburg, Va. The 13 new proposed sites are: Del Amo, Los Angeles, Calif.; Broad Brook Mill, East Windsor, Conn.; St. Maries Creosote, St. Maries, Idaho; Barker Hughesville Mining District, Barker, Mont.; Carpenter Snow Creek Mining District, Neihart, Mont.; Consolidated Iron and Metal, Newburgh, N.Y.; Taylor Lumber and Treating, Sheridan, Ore.; Bountiful/Woods Cross 5th South PCE Plume, Bountiful/Woods Cross Utah; Davenport and Flagstaff Smelters, Sandy City, Utah; Elizabeth Mine, Strafford, Vt.; Lower Duwamish Waterway, Seattle, Wash.; Ashland/Northland States Power Lakefront, Ashland, Wis.; and Chanute Air Force Base, Rantoul, Ill. This action appears in today’s Federal Register, with a public comment period on the proposed sites until Jan. 30, 2001.
