EUROPEANS AGREE TO ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRAM MODELED ON EPA ENERGY STAR PROGRAM

FOR RELEASE: THURSDAY, DEC. 21, 2000

EUROPEANS AGREE TO ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRAM
MODELED ON EPA ENERGY STAR PROGRAM

An agreement has been reached that will lead to the widespread introduction of energy efficient products in European markets. The agreement was signed today by EPA Deputy Administrator W. Michael McCabe and John Richardson, the Deputy Chief in Washington for the European Delegation. The Delegation represents the European Union(EU), a body of Western European countries organized to promote trade across borders. The EU agreed to implement an energy efficiency labeling program modeled after EPA’s Energy Star® program. This agreement, six years in the making, covers office equipment such as computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, copiers, and scanners, with other products possibly added in future years. By establishing uniform criteria for energy efficiency in the United States and the EU, there will be an increase in global supply and demand for energy efficient equipment. American manufacturers will have easier access to the European market with only one EU energy efficiency qualification to meet, instead of the patchwork of different country requirements they faced in the past. In addition, the agreement would lend greater authority to other nations’ efforts to stimulate the market for energy efficient products, and establish the EPA Energy Star program as the international leader in voluntary energy efficiency labeling.
