INTERAGENCY WORKGROUP PROPOSES CLEANING UP OPEN DUMPS IN INDIAN COUNTRYFOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, MARCH 19, 1999 The national Tribal Solid Waste Interagency Workgroup is soliciting proposals for its Tribal Open Dump Cleanup Project through April 23. The Workgroup was established in 1998 to help tribes bring their waste disposal sites into compliance with the federal municipal solid waste landfill criteria. Federal agencies will provide technical support and approximately $1.6 million to fund three to six tribes to close or upgrade high priority waste disposal sites. The Indian Health Service’s 1997 Report, “Open Dumps On Indian Lands,” will be used to help determine priority status. Information gathered from cleanup projects will be developed into a strategy to address additional solid waste management needs in Indian country. Representatives of the workgroup include: EPA; the Bureau of Indian Affairs; the Indian Health Service; the Federal Aviation Administration; the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; the U.S. Geological Survey; the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Defense.
