PA ILLEGAL DUMPING OF RADIOACTIVE WASTES

FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, JULY 19, 1996

ILLEGAL DUMPING OF LOW LEVEL HAZARDOUS RADIOACTIVE WASTES LEADS TO FELONY GUILTY PLEA FOR NEW YORK COMPANY AND ITS PRESIDENT

On July 12, the Broomer Research Corp. and its President, Mr. Thomas Kardos in Islip, N.Y., pleaded guilty to two felony violations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act for illegally storing and disposing of low level radioactive hazardous wastes. Broomer Research Corp. is a defense contractor which was involved in the instrumentation and manufacturing of infrared lenses, prisms, beamsplitters and associated coatings. The facility is located in a mixed residential and industrial area and is situated directly over one or more sources of underground drinking water. Broomer Research and Kardos pleaded guilty to disposing of low level radioactive hazardous waste by pouring them into the facility's storm drains, sinks and sanitary outfalls which emptied into the facility's septic system and created a threat to the aquifer. Broomer research may be fined up to $100,000 for this criminal activity and Mr. Kardos faces up to 24 months imprisonment. The case was investigated by EPA's Criminal Investigation Division, the Naval Investigative Service, the FBI, U.S. Air Force Criminal Investigation Division and the Defense Criminal Investigative Service.
