PA AGENDA FOR FINAL MEETING OF FOOD SAFETY COMMITTEE

FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1996

AGENDA FOR FINAL MEETING OF FOOD SAFETY COMMITTEE ANNOUNCED BY EPA

EPA has announced the agenda for the final meeting of the Food Safety Advisory Committee which will be held on Dec. 5, at the Sheraton Premiere Hotel near Tysons Corner, Va. The meeting is open to the public. The Food Safety Advisory Committee was formed in September as a subcommittee under the auspices of EPA's National Advisory Council for Environmental Policy and Technology. Its purpose is to assist EPA with the implementation of the Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA) signed into law on Aug. 3. The new law amends both the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act and the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act to provide a protective regulatory scheme for pesticides. The primary agenda will be a discussion of a draft outline of EPA's plan for implementing FQPA. Included will be the approach to science assessment, the interim decision logic for screening risks, the tolerance reassessment program and minor uses of pesticides. The Food Safety Advisory Committee is made up of approximately 45 representatives from the general public, environmental and public interest groups, the public health community, the chemical industry, agriculture and other pesticide user groups, food processors, federal and state governments, academia and others. Margie Fehrenbach of EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs is the Committee's designated federal officer and can be reached at 703-305- 7090 or by Internet: fehrenbach.margie@epa.gov. The meeting is scheduled from 8:30-4:00. The address of the Sheraton Premiere Hotel is 8661 Leesburg Pike, Vienna, Va., (703-448-1234). Take I-95 (Capital Beltway), exit at #10B from South (exit 10 from North) which is Route 7, go two miles (past Tysons Corner), make a left on Westwood Center Drive, go right to the service road and follow to the hotel lobby.
