PA CALI. CO. CHARGED WITH ILLEGAL IMPORTATION OF OZONE

FOR RELEASE: TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1996

CALIFORNIA COMPANY CHARGED WITH ILLEGAL IMPORTATION OF OZONE DEPLETING SOLVENT CFC-13

On Sept. 30, Four Star Chemical Co. of Vernon, Calif., was charged in a one-count felony information for importing 49,000 pounds of CFC-113, an ozone depleting chemical, without federal consumption allowances in violation of the Clean Air Act and federal Customs Laws. If convicted, Four Star Chemical faces penalties which may include the loss of the shipment, probation, fines and importation taxes. The case was investigated by EPA's Criminal Investigation Division and the U.S. Customs Service.
