PA MICHIGAN MEN INDICTED FOR HAZ. WASTE DISPOSAL CONSPIRACY

MICHIGAN MEN INDICTED FOR HAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSAL CONSPIRACY

On Dec. 11, Stephen Lord of Grand Blanc, Mich., Martin S. Stevenson of Prudenville, Mich., Robert M. Adams of Houghton Lake Heights, Mich., and Donald Lownsbery of Grayling, Mich., were named in a four-count federal felony indictment which alleges that they violated the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) by participating in a conspiracy to illegally dispose of paint waste containing methyl-ethyl ketone (MEK). MEK is listed as hazardous waste under RCRA and human exposure can lead to severe respiratory tract ailments and a loss of consciousness. The indictment states that the paint was allegedly misrepresented as non-hazardous hydraulic fluid and placed in a dumpster located at Lakeside Stamping Inc., in Prudenville, Mich. The waste was then alleged to have been disposed of at a landfill in Waters, Mich. which was not licensed for the disposal of hazardous wastes. The case was investigated by EPA's Criminal Investigation Division, the FBI and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.
