PA HYUNDAI HIGH ALTITUDE CARS RECALLED FOR EMISSION REPAIR

FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, MAY 31, 1996

HYUNDAI HIGH ALTITUDE CARS RECALLED FOR EMISSION REPAIR

EPA has announced that all l99l and l992 model year Hyundai Excels and Scoupes and the Mitsubishi Precis vehicles are being recalled because they exceed the federal hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide exhaust emission standard. The recall includes about 5,900 vehicles with l.5-liter engines that are registered only in high-altitude areas. EPA found the emission problem while testing the l99l vehicles at the Colorado Department of Health laboratory. Hyundai agreed to recall the vehicles and also include the l992 models. EPA said the emission repair involves installing a computer modulator kit. The catalytic converter and fuel pump will also be inspected and replaced if necessary. Repair time is about two to three hours and is free of charge. Hyundai began notifying owners of Excel and Scoupe vehicles May 30. Mitsubishi will notify Precis owners of the recall about one month later. Owners should schedule an appointment after receiving written notification from the manufacturer. Additional information may be obtained by contacting the Hyundai National Consumer Assistance Center at 800-633-5l5l or Cliff Dean of EPA at 202-233- 9240.
