EPA PROPOSES AMENDMENT TO HAZARDOUS WASTE RULE

FOR RELEASE: THURSDAY, AUGUST 17, 2000

EPA PROPOSES AMENDMENT TO HAZARDOUS WASTE RULE

EPA is proposing to amend the 1993 Corrective Action Management Unit (CAMU) rule to provide additional detail to the framework for managing hazardous clean-up wastes in CAMUs. This proposal is intended to make the agency’s general expectations for CAMUs clearer and the CAMU process more consistent, predictable and explicit. In proposed amendments, EPA seeks to achieve the proper balance between minimum standards while retaining the flexibility that is necessary to make site-specific CAMU decisions. This proposal provides: clarification of the types of wastes that may be managed in a CAMU; modification of the CAMU design standards; establishment of treatment requirements for wastes placed in CAMUs for permanent disposal; modification of the information submission requirements; establishment of new design and operation requirements for treatment and/or storage of cleanup wastes; provisions for “grandfathering” existing CAMUs; and establishment of state authorization processes. A copy of the proposal will be published in the Federal Register soon. A fact sheet is available on at: http://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/hazwaste/ca/resource/guidance/remwaste/camu or by calling the RCRA Hotline at 703-412-9810.
