EPA ANNOUNCES SCIENTIFIC AND PUBLIC PARTICIPATION FOR STARLINK CORN REVIEW

FOR RELEASE: MONDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2000

EPA ANNOUNCES SCIENTIFIC AND PUBLIC PARTICIPATION FOR STARLINK CORN REVIEW

Today EPA is announcing steps it will take to ensure a rigorous scientific and public review of new information submitted by Aventis and the food industry on StarLink corn. EPA is making available the new information and starting a 30-day public comment period. After that, a formal scientific peer review begins.

“The Agency will conduct a thorough scientific analysis of this new information, and will follow a rigorous process of scientific and public review to evaluate the allergenic potential of StarLink corn," said Stephen Johnson, EPA Deputy Assistant Administrator.

Aventis is asking the EPA to grant a time-limited exemption for processed food products. The issue under consideration is the allergenic potential of StarLink corn.

EPA expects to hold the scientific peer review meeting, which will be open to the public, during the last week of November. More information about this Federal Register notice and related documents can be found on EPA’s web site at: http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/biopesticides.
