PUBLIC TECHNICAL BRIEFING SET FOR MALATHION

FOR RELEASE: THURSDAY, OCT. 26, 2000

PUBLIC TECHNICAL BRIEFING SET FOR MALATHION

To increase stakeholder involvement in the reregistration of the organophosphate pesticide malathion, EPA is sponsoring a public technical briefing on Nov. 9. The briefing will provide an opportunity for the public to learn about the data, information, and methods that the Agency used to develop and revise the risk assessments for malathion. The technical briefing is part of the public participation process that EPA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are now using to involve the public in the reassessment of pesticide tolerances under the Food Quality Protection Act of 1996, and the reregistration process of organophosphate chemicals under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act. The notice announcing the briefing was published in the Federal Register on Oct. 20, and is also available at: http://www.epa.gov/fedrgstr/. The revised risk assessment will be available the day of the technical briefing, and initiates a 60-day public participation period during which the public may submit risk management and mitigation ideas, and recommendations and proposals for the ultimate decision on reregistration of malathion. The briefing will be held at the Radisson Old Town Hotel, 901 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, Va.
