STORM WATER GENERAL PERMIT PROPOSED FOR USE IN EIGHT REGIONS

FOR RELEASE: THURSDAY, MARCH 30, 2000

STORM WATER GENERAL PERMIT
PROPOSED FOR USE IN EIGHT REGIONS

EPA is proposing to re-issue the Multi-sector Storm Water General Permit to control storm water discharges from 29 sectors of industrial activity to protect water quality in rivers, lakes, wetlands and marine waters. The general permit, issued under the Clean Water Act’s National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), controls storm water discharges within eight EPA regions (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10) where the Agency is the permitting authority. The current general permit was first issued on Sept. 29, l995 and expires Sept. 29, 2000. EPA is committed to making the new permit easier for permittees, many of them small businesses, to understand and comply with. The proposed permit is scheduled for publication in the Federal Register on March 30, followed by a 60-day public comment period. Copies of the proposed permit and additional information on the NPDES storm water program are available at: http://www.epa.gov/owm/sw/industry/msgp/index.htm.
